Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are often chosen as a cosmetic dentistry option for patients who wish to improve their appearance. Veneers change the size, shape, length and color of the teeth in the front (anterior). They are typically made from thin, custom made porcelain plates that cover just the front of your teeth.

Veneers are used for teeth that are misshapen or heavily stained on the inside, known as intrinsic stains. The dentist at Manhattan Dental Design will take impressions of the teeth and have the lab make a custom fitting set of porcelain veneers that will perfectly fit the teeth of the patient.

Candidates for veneers would include patients who are experiencing the following dental issues:

  • Discolored teeth—examples might be because of injury or stains from tetracycline or other drugs
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Teeth that are misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped
  • Close the spaces between teeth

Cosmetic Dental Veneers

When the porcelain veneers are ready from the lab, an appointment is scheduled. The dentist usually numbs the patient with local anesthetic, and begins to reduce the size of the teeth by about a half a millimeter. This allows space for the veneers. Once the reduction is completed, the surface of the prepared tooth is etched with a special gel that desiccates and roughens up the surface of the tooth.

Adhesive bond is then applied with a tiny brush and a special ultraviolet light cures the bonding. The veneers are permanently cemented in place. Any adjustments are then made to ensure the patient can properly bite down and chew food. Proper adjustment will make the veneers last a long time and lessen the chances of breakage or chipping.
